The Tennessee Smokies have closed within half a game of first place in the Southern League North with six games to play.

The Smokies got three home runs to beat Jacksonville, 7-2, while Chattanooga was losing to Mobile, 4-2.

Here's more on the game from the Tennessee Smokies:

The Tennessee Smokies used three home runs to defeat the Jacksonville Suns (30-34, 67-67) Monday -night, 7-2.  Timely home runs by Josh Vitters, Nate Samson and Trey McNutt accounted for five of the Smokies seven runs.  The win, in front of 2,573, improves the Smokies to 37-27 on the second half, 80-54 overall.  Tennessee also moves closer to first-place Chattanooga, narrowing the Lookouts lead to half a game.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Andrew Cashner looked strong in his third rehab start with Tennessee.  The right-hander made quick work of the Suns in the first, striking out the side in 16 pitches before giving way to Trey McNutt.

Jacksonville struck first in the third, as Jim Negrych singled to bring in Neil Sellers and give them a 1-0 lead.

The Smokies wasted no time in answering.  Jae-Hoon Ha singled with two outs on the bottom half, and came around to score on a Rebel Ridling single.  Vitters then blasted his 13th homer of the year to left, making it 3-1.

McNutt helped his own cause in the following inning, hitting a solo home run to extend the lead to 4-1.  The opposite-field homer marked not only McNutt's first hit of the season, but also his first hit as a professional.

Samson got in on the act two innings later, following a Steve Clevenger single with a two-run home run to give the Smokies a 6-1 advantage.

Jeff Beliveau took things over in the eighth, relieving McNutt (5-5) after a solid outing.  The right-hander went six innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out five.

The lead grew to 7-1 when Jonathan Mota brought home Vitters with a two-out single in the eighth.

Jacksonville tacked on a run against Beliveau in the ninth to narrow the deficit to 7-2, but could not draw any closer.  The left-hander finished the night with two strikeouts, allowing a run and a hit in two innings of work.

Jose Alvarez (2-5) took the loss for the Suns, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings.

The Smokies will try to win the five-game series over Jacksonville on Tuesday night at 7:15 at Smokies Park.  Tennessee's Marco Carrillo (5-3, 2.54) will take on Jacksonville's Omar Poveda (8-6, 4.19).  For tickets and more information, fans can visit www.smokiesbaseball.com or by calling (865) 286-2300.
