Nearly 26 million adults and children nationwide have diabetes, including 14% of the population of East Tennessee.
Almost 7 million of those affected by the disease don't even know they have it.
Tuesday marked the 24th annual Diabetes Awareness Day and members of the East Tennessee chapter of the American Diabetes Association gathered in Market Square to encourage people to take their Diabetes Risk Test.
The questionnaire can help you determine your risk by calculating factors like age, weight, height and family history.
Organizers say it's a wake-up call for people to be aware.
"A lot of people are actually undiagnosed with diabetes, so by taking this simple, free risk test, they will understand if they need to change their lifestyle or if they need to change their eating habits," said Jill Thompson, a Community Leadership Board member with the East Tennessee chapter of American Diabetes Association.
