Chevrolet Volt is expected to be in dealerships by the end of 2011.
East Tennessee will soon see a new car on the roads that's generating buzz across the country.
The Chevrolet Volt is General Motors first electric hybrid vehicle that's making a soft launch nationwide. West Chevrolet got one of Tennessee's first Volts for display for a late 2011 launch.
"It's an extended range vehicle. It's got an electric battery with a gas engine in case you run low on battery," said dealership owner Charles West.
Since G.M. announced their plans for an electric car a few years ago, it has generated plenty of attention.
"Usually cars are available when they're finished, this car is publicized from the inception to the finished product," West added.
However, that is not the only electric car that's new to the market. Twin City Nissan is touting their new electric-only Leaf. They were also been gaining attention for their fuel efficient vehicle.
"This is the rage right now," said Twin City's Bill Riley. "It's great being first into the market with an all electric vehicle. So the demand is beyond what we can produce at this point."
Both cars have a base MSRP of more than $32,000. Dealers said they expect the price to go down as the technology develops.
"You got to kind of liken this to a first-generation cell phone or a first-generation VCR," West said. "They're not going to put too many out initially- a little higher price. But as the technology becomes more familiar, you're going to see a lot more cars on this platform."
The Leaf is currently on the market. The Volt is expected to be in Tennessee by the September or October.
