Grainger County residents are praying for a girl who sheriff deputies was beaten so badly by her peers, she had to go to the hospital.
Authorities say four female students attacked another 15-year-old female student at Washburn School Monday. The victim was released from the hospital Wednesday.
Members of Sunrise Baptist Church in Rutledge opened their Wednesday service with a prayer for the girl. Pastor Scott Howerton said incidents like the one authorities say happened at Washburn School prove violent acts can happen anywhere.
"It's not something you want to see happen, but when it does, you want to reach out in prayer for the individuals," he said.
Another congregation member, Stacey Gray, is also a parent. She said she has heard of bullying happening in local schools before.
"It makes it hard on them [students] to learn and feel free to do their schoolwork or to tell the teacher what's going on," Gray said.
Sheriff Layel did not refer to the incident as bullying.
