May 1st is the 30th anniversary of the opening of the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, and later this year, that milestone will be celebrated in the symbol of that fair-- the Sunsphere.
Organizers announced Tuesday that the celebration for the 30 year anniversary of the World's Fair will be on August 31st, Labor Day weekend and a couple of days before Boomsday.
The event will be called "Worlds Fair Park: Past, Present and Future." It will feature local food from the countries who were represented during the 1982 World's Fair.
The reason for the wait was to make sure everyone could enjoy all Knoxville still has to offer in 2012.
"We had so many people from different areas, different cities, in Tennessee and beyond, that we had to move our celebration out a little further. So what we are going to do to commemorate the World's Fair anniversary, by doing something for 6 months, each month doing something just to honor the 6 months run of the World's Fair," said Sarah Spangler.
There is a reception in honor of the anniversary of the start of the fair pm Tuesday evening at the Sunsphere, from 4-9 pm.
