How to help tornado victims

Damage in Harrogate, Claiborne County

Many East Tennesseans are picking up the pieces this week, after a severe weather outbreak left a path of destruction behind in several counties.

On Wednesday, the Rinnie Community was hit by an EF2 tornado.  Two women were killed, and more than 50 homes were seriously damaged and seven homes were destroyed.

On Friday, severe storms crossed the region for most of the day.  There was lots of damage, but no fatalities or serious injuries reported.

An EF2 tornado struck Etowah, in McMinn County, damaging several homes and causing some minor injuries.

Tellico Plains, in Monroe County, was also slammed by an EF2 tornado on Friday.  The area suffered extensive damage to power lines, trees, and some houses.

Friday evening, Claiborne County was also hit with an EF2 tornado.  The Shawanee Community suffered the most damage there, with ten homes destroyed, and 25-30 other homes receiving some damage.

In Knox County, an EF0 tornado brought the worst of the damage to the Strawberry Plains area, where a church located in a mobile home was destroyed.

Because of of those affected by the storms, WBIR is teaming up with the Knoxville Area Chapter of the Red Cross on Monday to raise money for those victims.  From Noon-6:30, you can call 584-2999 to make a donation.
