The Knoxville Sports & Social Club was created to provide recreational sports leagues and social events for adults over 21. They offer a variety of entertainment including kickball, dodge ball, softball, flag football, pub crawls and charitable events. It is the brain-child of co-owner, Joyce Stewart.
"Being a young professional myself, I found it extremely difficult to find that recreational outlet to meet other young professionals. So therefore we started this in Knoxville," said Joyce.
When people join, they play a minimum of 8 games over 8 weeks, plus playoffs, plus a preseason party and socials at a local sponsor bar after every game to recount the night's exploits and enjoy time with teammates and opponents alike.
"Two months we've been doing this. It's a lot of fun, get to go out and meet new people and have a lot of good times," says Jeremy Shaffer. "We get to vent frustration. Any other time you throw something at somebody's face you're going to jail."
Every Thursday, the club meets at Vine Middle School to compete in a school-yard-style battle royal. It starts off with smiles and laughter, but then things can get a little serious.
Joyce admits, "You are gonna see some pretty competitive people just reverting back to grammar school days. Getting upset if they get out, yelling."
But for a lot of folks, it's a great way to meet people and get plugged into the social pipeline. John White bounced around from city to city for his job since her graduated college.
"The great thing about this was they allow you to sign up as a free agent, where you don't know anybody, but you can still sign up for a team and that was basically me. I've met everybody on my team through this league. So it's been a great chance for me to get in there and meet a bunch of new people. It's been an awesome time."
